This project involved both minor alterations and extensive additions to a significant Victorian-era mansion located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Designed by Bryant Alsop Architects, the architectural scope comprised a contemporary two-storey rear addition, the sensitive refurbishment of a two-storey freestanding stables building, and a complete reworking of the rear garden and outdoor spaces.

Given the heritage classification of the original residence, Bryant Alsop worked in close collaboration with local council authorities to ensure the design respected and enhanced the historic fabric of the site. The resulting scheme maintains the grandeur of the existing structure while introducing a bold, contemporary addition that carefully references heritage materials and forms. Exposed red brick, bluestone, natural stone and high-performance glazing are used to create a visually rich yet complementary dialogue with the existing Victorian architecture.

Internally, the addition includes a new family kitchen, living and dining zone, alongside a bathroom and laundry, all designed to greatly improve the connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. A roof terrace was also introduced at the first floor to capture long views to the city, further enhancing the livability of the home.

The landscape design integrates a large in-ground pool, and a variety of outdoor spaces across different levels, allowing for better ‘flow’ and connection across the previously disconnected site.  IN addition, on site parking for 4 cars, with a double carport was sensitively created to the secondary street frontage.

Sustainability was a core consideration throughout the project, with the inclusion of solar power systems, green roofs, wide eaves, and high-performance insulation and glazing contributing to the home’s environmental performance.

Working closely with Clancy Constructions, the project was delivered with a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, achieving a seamless integration of contemporary design within a highly valued heritage context.
