Bryant Alsop was engaged for the design, documentation, and delivery of a new multi-use education and community facility at Wallan Primary School. The project comprised a competition-grade stadium, integrated teaching and amenities spaces, and extensive landscaping designed to unify the steeply sloping site.
With almost 14 metres of fall across the campus, careful master planning was key. Strategic siting of the new stadium ensures it serves both the school and the broader Wallan community. Positioned along a side street, the building provides secure access for students during school hours while remaining easily accessible for community sport and events.
The design expresses its dual purpose through two distinct frontages. A clear and welcoming public entry, defined by three circular windows referencing the Olympic rings, faces the community, while the school-facing elevation opens via large sliding doors to outdoor courts, enabling flexible, indoor-outdoor learning. The surrounding landscape enhances connectivity across the site through DDA-compliant ramps and stairs, creating a variety of circulation routes, play zones, and outdoor gathering areas.
The completed facility is a flexible, inclusive, and enduring asset supporting school sport, teaching, and assemblies, while also providing a vibrant community hub for the growing Wallan township.
